Histroy Of Kerala Day – Kerala Piravi

Kerala Piravi refers to the birth of the state of Kerala in India, which occurred on November 1, 1956. The state of Kerala was formed by combining the former states of Travancore-Cochin with Malabar district and Kasaragod taluk of South Canara district. This significant event marked the end of the political and administrative system of the feudal kingdoms in Kerala and the beginning of a new era of democratic governance.

In the early years of the 20th century, Kerala was a patchwork of small kingdoms ruled by local chieftains and monarchs. With the advent of the Indian independence movement, the people of Kerala began to demand greater autonomy and self-rule. The movement gained momentum in the post-World War II period, leading to the formation of the State Reorganization Commission in 1953 to reorganize the states of India on linguistic lines.

Despite India’s independence, Kerala was not recognized as a separate state. Instead, it was considered three different regions: Cochin, Travancore, and Malabar. Travancore occupied the southern region, Cochin the middle, and Malabar administered Kasaragod, Kannur, and Thalassery. However, in 1956, all three regions were merged under the State Reorganization Act, forming the state of Kerala.

After much deliberation and debate, the commission recommended the formation of a new state of Kerala, which was finally created on November 1, 1956. Since then, people have celebrated this day as Kerala Day or Kerala Piravi. Cultural programs and events are held across the state every year to commemorate the occasion.
