UK Visas and Immigration IELTS Test

On 20 February 2015, the UK government announced important changes to Secure English Language Tests (SELT) for visa purposes. If you make a visa application to stay or move to the UK, you need to be aware of changes made by United Kingdom Visas & Immigration (UKVI).

The UK government has announced important changes to language testing for visa applications, reducing the number of tests accepted for visa purposes and bringing in new requirements for the way the tests will be administered.

World’s most popular test of English for higher education and global migration – has been approved for all UK visas that require applicants to provide proof of their level of English. This continues the important role which IELTS has long played in language testing for immigration in the UK and other countries, including Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Under the new arrangements, IELTS tests for UK visa applications will be offered throughout the year in more than 100 key locations throughout the world, and a new test – IELTS Life Skills – will be introduced for people who need to prove their speaking and listening skills at level A1 or B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

What are the Changes?
  • If you are going to or staying in the UK, there is an IELTS test for you.
  • In addition to the IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic tests, which you may already know of, a new test called IELTS Life Skills will be introduced.
  • Life Skills test will be introduced for candidates who need to prove their speaking and listening skills at levels A1 or B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). This will be a single test covering speaking and listening skills.

Documents required for your UK student visa

When applying for your visa, you will generally need:

  • A current passport or other valid travel documentation
  • Evidence of funds to provide your living expenses for the duration of your course
  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number and documents used to obtain CAS
  • Passport-sized colour photographs
  • Tuberculosis screening (mandatory for South Asian countries)
  • Assessment documentation
  • Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance certificate (if required)

How to study in the UK without IELTS?

Is it possible to study in UK universities without IELTS? Yes, it is. But it also depends on the university and course you choose. However, we highly recommend writing the IELTS exam as it can help you in your career and secure other visas.

Without thinking about the minimum IELTS band for UK student visa, you can still study in the UK. Some of the well-known UK universities are Birmingham City University, University of Bolton, Brunel University, University of Northampton, University of Geneva, Swansea University, University of Greenwich, University of Plymouth, and many more.

If you fulfil these requirements, you don’t need to check the IELTS band for UK.

  • A score of 70% and above in English in Class 10th, 11th, and 12th.
  • Proof that you have studied at an English medium school.
  • Having an undergraduate degree in English (depending on the university.)
  • Amazing performance in the online interview conducted by the university.
  • You may be asked to pursue a pre-sessional English course at your university before beginning the study program.

Tips to Get Good IELTS Band

The IELTS success depends on more than just your ability to communicate in English. It also depends on how carefully you understand the assignments (frequently, they are intentionally written in a way that is difficult), how quickly you set priorities throughout the test, and how well you manage your time. You need to acquaint yourself with the test’s layout and the response sheet patterns before you do anything else.

Read the test’s layout and become familiar with it.

You must be completely informed of what is expected of you in terms of schedule, work kinds, breaks, and expectations. Recognize the many sorts of questions.

Establish attainable objectives, but try to exceed them

It’s not required to get a good grade the first time, but you can improve the following time. Perfectionism is a process that requires practice. Make errors. To avoid making the same mistakes over and over again, understand why you make them.

Spend at least 30 minutes a day speaking English aloud.

Listen to a recording of your own voice. Videotape yourself if required; the camera doesn’t lie. You will be able to hear your own blunders and inaccuracies in pronunciation when listening to this record.

See television programmes and podcasts.

There are several excellent television programmes, such as F.R.I.E.N.D.S. in its original language with English subtitles. Once you are able to do it without subtitles. master it. You can then consider yourself prepared when you can watch movies without subtitles.

Study the exam strategy.

In every case, it is strongly advised to review the whole text or exercise before beginning and to underline the terms you anticipate receiving the most attention. This will assist you in navigating to the question-answer later on and assisting your subconscious mind in segmenting the content. To discover the solution, use the question’s keywords. Have a plan for the written responses and adhere to it consistently. Writing that is organised earns higher points for the written portion.

Just respond to the question.

Nothing more or less. Do not stray from the subject or exceed the allowed time. You can get away with giving your logic 2 or 3 points. Avoid going too far. Unless expressly asked to provide more than one choice, just offer one response.

Remove pointless background noise.

In the huge data volume of the IELTS, finding pertinent solutions is key. The tasks will be difficult and time-consuming, but do not let that deter you; your mission is to uncover the answers to those questions, and that should be your main driving force.

If you have time, go back and review your responses.

As we are all human, we could miss something. When uncertain, hazard logical guesses. Do not leave anything unfilled. Verify your handwriting, spelling, and grammar. By default, your writing will be incorrectly labelled if it is unclear. If your response does not have a proper grammatical structure, it can be labelled incorrect. Less is more in most cases. Whenever in doubt, give succinct but detailed responses.

Every day, practise.

Set priorities for your time and sectionalize your research. Plan and prepare for 45 minutes of focused study time and 15 minutes of breaks. Put away all of the eye-catching gadgets and log out of social media. Don’t ignore any module. Spend the same amount of time speaking, reading, writing, and listening. It is strongly recommended to put more of an emphasis on the writing and reading modules since they will afterwards help the other modules to get better.

Read in the language of English.

Ensure that you are up to date on current affairs. Consider yourself prepared once you are at ease reading a daily newspaper. Your vocabulary and grammar will thus improve as a result of this. To employ synonyms, expand your vocabulary. Become acquainted with them. Repeating words and utilising short sentences will not increase your score and may even work against you. Learn 15 best practise words, phrases, and linking words, and retain them in your memory at all times so you can use them in any circumstance. You will benefit from this in every test module.
