With 28 Technician (1) vacancies across 13 trades at CSIR-CFTRI, Mysuru (Advertisement No. Rec.02/2026), competition will come from ITI holders across the country. Hard work matters, but strategy decides who makes the merit list.
This guide gives you a complete CFTRI Technician preparation strategy: how to handle each paper, how negative marking changes the way you attempt questions, how to manage a very tight clock, how to prepare for the Trade Test, and how to avoid the application-stage mistakes that cause rejection before you even sit the exam.
CSIR CFTRI Exam Pattern 2026
- 150 questions, 2 hours 30 minutes in total, OMR or computer-based MCQs, standard SSC + ITI / XII.
- Papers II and III are evaluated only if you score above the Paper I threshold, which will be decided by the Selection Committee and published on the CFTRI website before the test.
- Final merit = Paper II + Paper III = 300 marks.
- Tie-breakers: higher trade-paper marks first, then fewer negative marks, then older date of birth, and so on.
| Stage / Paper | Subject | Qs | Marks | Time | Negative | Counts for merit? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | Screening of applications | – | – | – | – | Eligibility gate |
| Stage 2 | Trade Test | – | – | – | – | Qualifying |
| Paper I | Mental Ability | 50 | 100 (2 per Q) | 1 hr | None | Qualifying |
| Paper II | General Awareness | 25 | 75 (3 per Q) | 30 min (with English) | –1 | Yes |
| Paper II | English Language | 25 | 75 (3 per Q) | –1 | Yes | |
| Paper III | Trade (concerned) subject | 50 | 150 (3 per Q) | 1 hr | –1 | Yes |
CFTRI Technician Preparation Tips 2026 – Best Strategy
1: Between the period of 1858-1947, how many Viceroys ruled over India?
Secure Your Application First! You cannot score marks if your application is rejected. The notification is blunt about this, so treat the paperwork as the first stage of your preparation.
Key dates
- Online application: 19 Oct – 18 Nov 2026 (11:59 PM)
- Signed hard copy must reach CFTRI by 26 Nov 2026. Online applications without the hard copy are summarily rejected.
Application tips
- Apply early. The notification warns that last-day server load can block submissions and that the date will not be extended.
- Match every detail to your 10th certificate: name, date of birth and parents’ names, exactly as printed. Mismatch means rejection.
- Fill the profile carefully. Once the profile is locked, it cannot be edited. Application details can’t be edited after final submission either.
- Keep scans clear and in the right size: photo and signature under 50 KB (JPG), documents as PDF under 1 MB each. Capture the live photo on the portal, because it can’t be uploaded as a file.
- Fee: ₹500, non-refundable, via SBI Collect. SC/ST/PwBD/Women/Ex-servicemen are exempt with proof. Upload the e-receipt before submitting.
- Hard copy by speed post or registered post only, with the signed printout, pasted and signed photograph, and self-attested copies of all documents.
- Separate envelope and application for each post code if you apply for more than one trade. Write the post name, post code and “Advertisement No. Rec.02/2026” on the envelope.
- Keep the postal tracking slip. Posting a few days early is the best insurance against delay, since late arrivals are not entertained.
- Employees of government/CSIR/PSU/universities: upload an NOC at the time of applying.
Paper-Wise Strategy
Paper I: Mental Ability (qualifying, no negative marking)
- Clear the cut-off comfortably. No negative marking means attempt every question.
- Order of attack: easy reasoning (series, analogies, coding-decoding, odd-one-out) → basic arithmetic (percentage, ratio, average, time-work) → puzzles and seating last.
- Speed rule: about 72 seconds per question. If a puzzle eats more than 2 minutes, mark a guess and move on.
- Situational judgement: pick the lawful, safe and proper-channel option.
- Prepare by pattern, not by topic: 15–20 questions daily, then review mistakes.
Paper II, Part A: General Awareness (25 Qs, 3 marks each, –1)
- Score on the questions you know. Don’t gamble on the rest.
- High-yield zones: general science (NCERT Class 6–10 level), static GK (polity, geography, history basics), important days, awards, recent science and technology news, and CSIR/CFTRI facts, since the setters are from the institute.
- Technique: build a one-page “last-week” sheet of facts you tend to forget. Use flashcards or short quizzes rather than long reading sessions.
- Mark only if you can recall or eliminate options.
Paper II, Part B: English (25 Qs, 3 marks each, –1)
- Convert grammar knowledge into quick, accurate marks. This is often the most scoring section for ITI candidates who prepare it, because the questions are rule-based.
- Focus: error spotting, fill-in-the-blanks, synonyms/antonyms, one-word substitution, idioms, sentence improvement, simple comprehension.
- Technique: learn rules and apply them mechanically; avoid “it sounds right” decisions.
- Comprehension: read the questions first, then scan the passage for answers.
Paper III: Trade Subject (50 Qs, 3 marks each, –1)
- The highest score you can get, since it’s half of merit and your tie-breaker.
- Base: your ITI trade-theory textbook (NIMI) is your core syllabus. Cover every chapter once, then revisit by weightage.
- Technique:
- Learn tools, instruments, units, standard values and safety rules by heart. These are easy, repeated MCQ sources.
- Practise numerical and formula questions in your trade (for example Ohm’s law, fits and tolerances, refrigeration cycle values).
- Revise with trade-specific MCQs, not just theory re-reads.
Negative-Marking Strategy
Papers II and III award +3 for a correct answer and –1 for a wrong answer. Paper I has no negative marking.
Assuming four options per question (the notification does not state the number of options):
| Situation | Expected marks per question |
|---|---|
| Pure random guess (4 options) | (¼ × 3) – (¾ × 1) = 0 |
| You can eliminate 1 option (3 left) | (⅓ × 3) – (⅔ × 1) = +0.33 |
| You can eliminate 2 options (2 left) | (½ × 3) – (½ × 1) = +1.0 |
| You are fairly sure of one answer | Strongly positive |
What this means for you
- Blind guessing doesn’t pay, because it just adds variance without improving the expected score.
- Eliminate-and-guess does pay. Narrow it down to two options and attempt.
- Break-even accuracy is 25% on a question you attempt. Anything above is a net gain, but aim for 75%+ accuracy on what you attempt, because one wrong answer cancels one-third of a right one.
- In Paper I, always attempt everything: zero penalty, so guessing is free.
Time Management Tips
| Paper | Questions | Time | Seconds per question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper I | 50 | 60 min | ~72 s |
| Paper II (GA + English) | 50 | 30 min | ~36 s |
| Paper III | 50 | 60 min | ~72 s |
Paper II is a speed paper. Thirty minutes for 50 questions means you must answer GA and English almost on recall. If you have not practised under time pressure, you will leave marks on the table even when you know the material.
Tactics
- Paper II: do English error-spotting/fill-in-the-blanks and the GA questions you know instantly first (≈15–20 s each). Leave comprehension and lengthy ones for the end. Bank time for the doubtful ones.
- Paper III: do theory and one-liner questions first, then calculations. Keep the last 8–10 minutes for review of marked questions.
- All papers: make two passes. Pass 1 = sure answers. Pass 2 = doubtful ones, using elimination.
- Check the exact sitting and timing rules in your admit card. The notification gives a total of 2 hours 30 minutes across papers.
Trade Test Preparation Strategy
The Trade Test is qualifying in nature and happens before the written exam, for candidates shortlisted by the Screening Committee. CFTRI has not yet published the format, marks or cut-off. The qualifying cut-off for Trade Test and Paper I will be notified on the CFTRI website.
What to do now
- Revise your practical skills in your own trade. Expect tasks drawn from your ITI practical syllabus: tool handling, measuring, simple jobs, fault finding, safety.
- Know your tools and instruments by name and use. Be able to explain what you are doing.
- Practise basic jobs to time. A simple fitting, wiring, soldering, assembly, lab-prep or computer task, depending on your trade.
- Revise safety rules for your trade. Interviewers and examiners notice safe practice.
- Carry original documents when called. Document mismatches found during verification can cancel candidature.
- Stay updated: the screened/shortlisted list, criteria and test details will be displayed only on https://www.cftri.res.in. There is no separate call letter by post.
Strategy by Candidate Type
| You are… | Your priority |
|---|---|
| Fresh ITI pass-out | Trade theory is fresh. Spend more time on General Awareness, English and Paper II speed |
| Apprentice (2 years) | Strong practical skills. Review trade theory formally, and build GA/English |
| Experienced worker (3 years’ trade experience) | Strong practical sense. Relearn theory definitions, standard values and reasoning/English from scratch |
| Government/CSIR employee | Arrange the NOC and age-concession certificate early; protect study time around work |
| Applying for multiple trades | Prepare the trades only if you are eligible for each. Paper III content differs, so choose realistically |
| Women / SC / ST / PwBD / ESM | Use fee exemption with proper documents. Check age relaxations and category certificates in the formats provided in the notification |
Daily and Weekly Study Habits
Daily (3–4 hours is realistic alongside a job)
- 60–90 minutes: trade subject (reading + MCQs)
- 45 minutes: reasoning/aptitude (timed practice)
- 30 minutes: English (rules + 10 new words)
- 30 minutes: General Awareness (one topic + quiz)
- 15 minutes: current affairs headlines
Weekly
- One sectional test per paper
- One review session where you rewrite wrong answers in an “error notebook”
- One revision pass over your short notes
Habits that pay off
- Fixed study slots, not “when I find time”
- Error notebook: note the question, the right answer and why you missed it
- Active recall: close the book and write what you remember
- Sleep and breaks: sharp recall beats extra tired hours
Revision Strategy
- 1-7-30 rule: revise a topic after 1 day, 7 days and 30 days.
- Short notes only for revision. One page per subject: formulas, tool lists, grammar rules, static facts.
- Last 10 days: no new topics. Re-solve your error notebook, redo mocks and revise one-pagers.
- Last night: light revision, document check, sleep.
Mock Test Strategy
Mock tests are where your time management and negative-marking discipline are built.
| Phase | What to do |
|---|---|
| Early | Topic-wise quizzes to find weak areas |
| Middle | Sectional tests with real timing (Paper II in 30 minutes!) |
| Final | Full-length 150-question mocks at 2 h 30 min, with +3 / –1 marking |
