Venn diagram is the most convenient way of solving syllogism. We can understand the technique of solving syllogism through some examples.

Types of Syllogism

Type 1: All type

Statements

All birds are books

All books are quarters

Conclusion

  1.  All birds are quarter
  2.  some quarters are birds
  3.  Some quarters are books
  4.  Some books are birds

a) 1,2 and 3 follow   b) 2,3.4 follow  c) 1,2and 4 follow    d)1,3 and 4 follow    e) All follow

Answer e) All follow

Explanation: In this given diagram, we can deduct the direct relation between all the statements. So, all some cases are possible. Hence conclusion 2,3 and 4 follows. From the Venn diagram, the whole part of the bird is inside quarter, hence conclusion 1 also follows

Statements

All rats are bells

All bells are cars

Conclusions

  1. All bells are rats
  2. Some cars are neither bells nor rats
  3. All cars are bells

a) only 1    b) Only 2     c) only 3   d) only 2 and 3    e) None follows

Answer e) None follows

Explanation: In conclusion 1, we can’t state that all bells are rats with surety. Conclusion 2, there may be a possibility of bells being rates and in 3, we can’t state the relationship with surety.

  3. All rods are lamps

a) Only either book or lamp    b) Only 1 and 3 follow     c) Only 2 and 3 follows    d) None follows   e) All follows

Answer  d) None follows

Explanation: Neither of the 3 statements draws a  sure conclusion, a case of possibility is drawn. Therefore, none of the statement follows.

Statements

Some hotels are bricks

All bananas are bricks

Conclusion

  1. Some bananas are hotels
  2. Some bricks are hotels
  3. No banana is a hotel

a) Only 1 and 2 follow    b) Only 2 and 3 follow    c) Only 1 follows    d) Only either 1or 3 and 2 follow                  e) All follow

Answer  d) Only either 1or 3 and 2 follow

Explanation: Some part of banana overlaps with hotels, so conclusion 2 follows. Both 1 and 3 are of contradicting nature, and neither of them follows as its own bringing a case of possibility. Therefore, either 1 or 3 follows but the possibility of both following has been ruled out.
