Kerala PSC has clearly stated that apart from the topics listed below, questions from other topics prescribed for the educational qualification of the post may also appear in the question paper. There is no guarantee that all the listed topics will be covered in the exam. Candidates are advised to have a strong overall foundation in Electrical Engineering diploma-level subjects rather than restricting preparation strictly to the listed modules.
Module 1: Fundamentals of Electricity (10 Marks)
This module covers the basic building blocks of electrical engineering, including voltage, current, resistance, energy, and power along with their definitions and units. It includes Ohm’s Law and related numerical problems, series and parallel resistance calculations, and Kirchhoff’s Current Law (KCL) and Voltage Law (KVL).
Module 2: Electrostatics and Electromagnetism (10 Marks)
Topics include the laws of electrostatics, permittivity, electric flux and flux density, potential and potential difference with related problems, lightning phenomenon, dielectric strength, and capacitors in series and parallel with energy storage calculations. It also covers Coulomb’s Law, permeability, magnetic flux, reluctance, MMF, Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction, Lenz’s Law, self and mutual inductance, energy stored in an inductor, and Fleming’s Laws.
Module 3: Fundamentals of AC Systems (10 Marks)
This module deals with the generation of AC voltage and its equations, basic AC terminology such as amplitude, frequency, cycle, time period, average value, instantaneous value, RMS value, form factor, and peak factor. It also includes AC behavior through resistance, inductance, and capacitance, along with star and delta connections in three-phase AC systems.
Module 4: Measurements and Measuring Instruments (10 Marks)
Covers various electrical measuring instruments including voltmeters, ammeters, energy meters, and wattmeters, single and three-phase power measurement, measurement of resistance, inductance, and capacitance. Also includes power factor meters, synchroscope, TOD meter, CRO, insulation megger, earth megger, multimeter, CT, and PT.
Module 5: Safety, First Aid, Batteries and Solar Cells (10 Marks)
Focuses on basic safety requirements, electric shock prevention, first aid procedures, and the installation, care, and maintenance of batteries and solar cells, including calculation of the number of cells required for a given power requirement.
Module 6: Wiring Accessories (10 Marks)
Includes various wiring systems, types of wires (single strand and multistrand) with current ratings, fuses (cartridge and HRC types), switches (SPST, SPDT, TPTT, ICDP, ICTP, toggle, limit switch), safety devices like MCB, ELCB, and RCCB, electrical illumination, and earthing methods (pipe and plate earthing).
Module 7: DC Machines (10 Marks)
Covers DC generators including construction, working, classification, EMF equation, wave and lap windings, and characteristics with numerical problems. Also includes DC motors — construction, working, types, EMF equation, torque calculations, starters, speed control, testing, and MG sets.
Module 8: AC Machines (10 Marks)
This is a broad module covering transformers (construction, principle, types, EMF equation, transformation ratio, losses, efficiency, all-day efficiency), three-phase induction motors (principle, construction, types, slip, torque, losses, efficiency, power stages, speed control, starters), alternators, three-phase synchronous motors, and single-phase/FHP motors including universal motor, AC series motor, servomotor, stepper motor, and split phase motor.
Module 9: Digital Electronics (10 Marks)
Includes number systems, logic gates (AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR), De Morgan’s theorems, half adder, full adder, flip-flops, shift registers, counters, ADC, DAC, and soldering techniques.
Module 10: Power Electronics (10 Marks)
Covers half-wave and full-wave rectifiers with and without filters, UJT relaxation oscillator, FET, JFET, Triac, Diac, IGBT, SCR, and the operation and maintenance of inverters, regulated DC power supplies, battery chargers, and UPS systems.

Preparation Tips for Kerala PSC Workshop Instructor Exam 2026
- Prioritize modules with strong numerical components (Modules I, II, III, VII, VIII) since these often carry problem-solving questions.
- Revise diploma-level Electrical Engineering textbooks alongside this syllabus, since the notification allows for questions outside the listed topics.
- Practice previous KPSC question papers for similar posts like Electrician, Sub Engineer (Electrical), and Junior Instructor to understand the question difficulty level.
- Focus equally on theory and application-based questions, especially in Wiring Accessories and Safety modules, which are often asked in a practical context.
- Keep formula sheets handy for AC/DC machine calculations, as these modules are numerically intensive.
