SSC CGL 2026 General Qualification

All posts except JSO and Statistical Investigator Grade-II:

SSC CGL 2026 Assistant Audit Officer (Central Cadre) — Qualification

Essential: Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or Institute

Desirable (not mandatory, but preferred during departmental allocation):

• Chartered Accountant (CA), OR
• Cost & Management Accountant (CMA), OR
• Company Secretary (CS), OR
• Masters in Commerce (M.Com), OR
• Masters in Business Studies, OR
• Masters in Business Administration (Finance) / MBA Finance, OR
• Masters in Business Economics (MBE)

Probation condition: During probation, direct recruits must qualify the “Subordinate Audit / Accounts Service Examination” for confirmation and regular appointment.

SSC CGL 2026 Assistant Audit Officer (State Cadre) — Qualification

Essential:

1. Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or Institute
2. Proficiency in the Regional / official language of the State concerned — ability to read, write, speak, and understand the language at matriculation level. Candidates must have passed the language at Secondary School Examination level from a recognized State/Central Board.

Desirable: Same as Central Cadre (CA / CMA / CS / MBA Finance / M.Com / MBE)

SSC CGL 2026 Assistant Accounts Officer (State Cadre) — Qualification

Essential:

1. Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or Institute
2. Proficiency in the Regional / official language of the State — same requirement as ASO State Cadre above

Desirable: CA / CMA / CS / MBA Finance / M.Com / MBE

SSC CGL 2026 Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) — Special Qualification

This is one of the two posts in SSC CGL 2026 that have a specific educational qualification requirement beyond a general bachelor’s degree.

Essential (either of the following):

• Option A: Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from a recognized University/Institute with at least 60% marks in Mathematics at 12th standard level
• Option B: Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at the degree level (graduation)

It means a B.Com student who scored 60%+ in Maths in Class 12 is eligible for JSO. Similarly, a B.Sc student with Statistics as a subject in graduation is eligible — regardless of graduation stream or percentage.

SSC CGL 2026 Statistical Investigator Grade-II — Special Qualification

Bachelor’s Degree in any one of the following subjects from a recognized University/Institute:

• Statistics
• Mathematics
• Economics
• Demography
• Population Studies
• Operation Research
• Information Technology
• Computer Science
• Computer Engineering
• Computer Technology
• Computer Application
• Data Science
• Artificial Intelligence

Students from B.Sc (Statistics / Maths / Economics / IT / CS), BCA, B.Tech (CS/IT), or similar streams are eligible. General arts/commerce graduates without any of these subjects in their degree are NOT eligible for this post.

SSC CGL 2026 Educational Qualification — Important Rules

Rule 1 — Cut-off Date: All educational qualifications must be obtained on or before 01 August 2026. Final year students can apply, but their degree must be completed and the result declared by this date.

The result must be declared by 01.08.2026. Mere processing of result by the university does not count. If your university has processed the exam but not declared the result by the cut-off, you do not meet the EQ requirement.

Rule 2 — Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Degrees: Degrees obtained through Open and Distance Learning mode (e.g., IGNOU, YCMOU, NSOU, etc.) are valid provided:

• The university is established by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature, or is a Deemed University under UGC Act, or is an Institution of National Importance
• The degree/course has been approved by the UGC Distance Education Bureau for the relevant period

At the time of document verification, such candidates must produce the UGC Distance Education Bureau’s approval letter for the relevant period.

Rule 3 — ODL Exceptions (Streams Not Allowed in Distance Mode): The following programmes are NOT permitted under ODL mode as per UGC Regulations 2017:

• Engineering, Medicine, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy, Architecture, Physiotherapy

Exception: B.Tech / Engineering degrees awarded by IGNOU to students enrolled up to academic year 2009–10 are valid as per the Supreme Court order dated 11-03-2019.

Rule 4 — Equivalent Qualification: Candidates possessing qualifications equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree can also apply, but must produce a relevant Equivalence Certificate from the competent authority at the time of document verification.

SSC CGL 2026 Eligibility for Ex-Servicemen (ESM)

Ex-Servicemen eligibility for SSC CGL 2026 is governed by specific rules:

Definition of Ex-Serviceman: A person who has served in any rank (combatant or non-combatant) in the regular Army, Navy, or Air Force of the Indian Union and:

• Has been retired / relieved / discharged from service after earning pension, OR
• Has been relieved on medical grounds attributable to military service and awarded disability pension, OR
• Has been released due to reduction in establishment, OR
• Has completed the specific period of engagement and has been given gratuity

This also includes:

• Personnel of the Territorial Army (pension holders for continuous embodied service)
• Personnel of Army Postal Service (retired with pension from APS)
• Personnel who were on deputation in Army Postal Service for more than 6 months prior to 14 April 1987
• Gallantry award winners of the Armed Forces including Territorial Army
• Ex-recruits boarded out on medical grounds with disability pension

Matriculate Ex-Servicemen — Group C Posts: A matriculate (non-graduate) Ex-Serviceman who has put in not less than 15 years of service with the Armed Forces is eligible for Group C reserved vacancies in SSC CGL 2026. Non-graduate ESM candidates who have not completed 15 years of service are NOT eligible. ESM candidates are NOT eligible for Group B posts unless they are graduates.

Important ESM Age Relaxation Rule:

• ESM relaxation = 3 years after deduction of the military service period from the actual age as on 01.08.2026
• “Call up Service” also counts as service rendered for age relaxation purposes
• Age relaxation and ESM reservation is NOT applicable to sons, daughters, or dependents of Ex-Servicemen

ESM Re-employment Rule: Ex-Servicemen who have already secured civil employment under Central Government (Group C/D) on a regular basis after availing ESM reservation benefits are not eligible for ESM reservation again. However, they can avail the benefit in subsequent employment if they had applied for that post before joining civil employment and had given a self-declaration/undertaking to their employer.

SSC CGL 2026 Eligibility — Physical & Medical Standards (Post-Specific)

Certain posts in SSC CGL 2026 have specific Physical Standards, Physical Tests, and Medical Standards in addition to the standard eligibility criteria. These are tested after the final selection by the respective User Departments, not by SSC during the examination.

• UDC/SSA — Border Roads Organisation (BRO)

Candidates must ensure they fulfil all physical/medical requirements of their preferred posts before listing them as preferences. SSC allocates posts based on merit-cum-preference, and once a post is allotted, it cannot be changed. If you fail the physical/medical test of the User Department after final selection, your candidature will be cancelled — SSC will not be responsible.

SSC CGL 2026 Category Certificates — Rules & Important Notes

Crucial Date for Category Claims: The crucial date for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD/ESM status claims (for reservation, age relaxation, fee exemption) is the closing date for receipt of online applications — 22 June 2026.

This means you must belong to the claimed category on 22 June 2026. It does NOT mean your certificate must be dated before 22 June 2026 — it means you must be a genuine member of that category on that date.

OBC Certificate Rules

• Must be a valid Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) OBC certificate
• Certificate must confirm that the candidate does not fall in the creamy layer as on the closing date (22 June 2026)
• SSC will NOT insist on OBC certificate issued within the crucial/cut-off date during initial processing. However, OBC candidature remains provisional subject to verification by the Appointing Authority
• OBC certificate must be in the prescribed format (Annexure-X) of the notification

EWS Certificate Rules

• Must be an Income & Asset certificate valid for Financial Year 2026–2027, issued based on income for Financial Year 2025–2026
• Must be as per Annexure-XI format of the notification
• As per DoPT’s OM No. 36039/1/2019-Estt(Res) dated 31.01.2019

SC/ST Certificate Rules

• Must be from the competent authority in the prescribed format (Annexure) of the notification
• Certificates in any other format are liable to be rejected

PwBD Certificate Rules

• Must select the correct PwBD sub-category: OH (Orthopaedic), HH (Hearing), VH (Visual), or PwBD-Other
• No subsequent change of PwBD sub-category allowed under any circumstances
• Certificate must clearly mention the type of disability (OA, OL, BL, DW, MI, SLD, etc.)
• Certificate under the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995 is also valid

Submitting a wrong category in the application form and being unable to produce the correct certificate at document verification will lead to cancellation of candidature. The Commission will bear no responsibility in such cases.

Eligibility Mistakes Candidates Must Avoid in SSC CGL 2026

Applying without a graduation degree: 12th pass candidates are NOT eligible. Ensure your Bachelor’s degree is completed or being completed by 01.08.2026.

Ignoring the age cut-off date: Age is calculated as on 01 August 2026, not on the application date. Many candidates miscalculate this.

Claiming OBC without Non-Creamy Layer status: OBC reservation requires a valid Non-Creamy Layer certificate. Creamy layer OBC candidates are NOT eligible for OBC reservation or age relaxation.

Applying for JSO without checking the Maths/Statistics qualification: JSO needs either 60% in Maths at 12th OR Statistics as a graduation subject. Many arts/commerce graduates apply for JSO without checking this and waste a preference.

Ignoring physical standard requirements for Inspector/SI posts: If you choose Inspector Central Excise, SI CBI, NCB, NIA, or similar posts but cannot clear the physical test, your candidature will be cancelled at the departmental stage. Check physical standards before setting preferences.

Not verifying ODL degree validity: If your graduation is from a distance learning institution, check whether the UGC has approved your specific course for the relevant year. Carry the approval letter to document verification.

Wrong category in application form: Once submitted and the correction window passes, the category cannot be changed. Selecting the wrong category (e.g., OBC instead of General, or OBC without valid NCL status) leads to cancellation.
