Spotting Error Questions for Bank Exam 2020

Spotting Error is an important topic in the English language section of Bank Exam. Although it may seem difficult and vague at first, constantly solving these questions will make it a lot easier. The best way to improve in this is to understand the different ways in which the questions may be asked. Spotting Error questions gives a sentence to the aspirant and asks them to check whether there is an error in the sentence/question given or not. They’ll give options highlighting some parts and the aspirant needs to deduce which option contains the part with the error. Sometimes, there may be no error in the sentence. The aspirant needs to be cautious. Examples will be given in the subsequent segments.

Types of Spotting Error Questions

In this segment, we will discuss and analyse the different types of Spotting Error Questions that can appear in Bank Exam.

Type 1

The first kind of error in the Spotting Error questions is about determining whether singular or plural verb is to be used in a sentence. To understand, look at this example:

(A) Many students is / (B) fighting for / (C) Bank jobs / (D) no error.

Spot the error in the sentence.

In this case, the answer would be the (A). ‘Many students is’ would become ‘many students are’. So, in the first case, the singular is changed to the plural verb.

Type 2

The second kind of Spotting Error Question involves the case of fillers before the infinite verbs. To understand, look at this example:

(A) Do you know / (B) to fix / (C) a car / (D) no error.

Spot the error in the sentence.

The answer is (B). The infinite verb, ‘to fix’ is incomplete without ‘how’. You can refer to the last segment to get a look at more questions relating to Spotting Error.

Type 3

The third kind of Spotting Error question involves the tenses of verbs. In this kind of question, you need to spot the error which has to do with the correct tense of the verb. The tenses Spotting Error questions are common and hard because they can be asked in many different ways. It requires rigorous practice. To understand, look at this example:

(A) The governor was efficient / (B) and ensure that the King was happy / (c) as well as his subjects / (D) no error.

In this case, the correct option would be (B) and ensured that the King was happy as the event had occurred in the past (as could be determined by the usage of was in the first part of the sentence).

Therefore, it is necessary to know all three types of Spotting Error Questions to solve them to the best of your ability.

Common Errors

In this segment, we are going to present you with a few common mistakes and errors people make while dealing with Spotting Error Questions.

1. ‘Much is used before uncountable nouns and ‘Many’ is used before countable nouns.

Example: They drank too much milk. There were many cars.

2. ‘Than’ should be used after ‘No other’.

Example: That was none other than the legend himself, Mr. Jack.

3. ‘Whose’ is used for living entities and ‘Which’ is used for non-living entities.

Example: Whose car do you prefer? Which car do you prefer?

4. ‘Though’ is followed by yet.

Example: Though he is rich, yet he’s hated.

5. ‘Hardly’ is followed by ‘When’.

Example: Jack had hardly entered the room when his phone began to ring.

6. Some nouns may be singular in wording but possess a plural nature.

Example: The Police (Police is singular in wording but used as plural) are in the area.

7. ‘Such’ must be followed by ‘as’ and ‘Lest’ must be followed by ‘should’.

Example: They feared to spare him lest he should report the matter to the Principal. In the USA, you will see people of various ethnicity such as Indian and Egyptian.

8. ‘not’ is never used with ‘unless’

This is because ‘unless’ is used in a negative sense unless it is used as a condition to agreements, etc.

Answer is (B). It should be ‘Awaiting’.

4. (A) I am much pleased/ (B) to know that/ (C) you have topped the list/ (D) No error.

Answer is (A). It should be ‘I am very pleased’.

5. (A) The warden/ (B) forbade the student/ (C) from leaving the hostel/ (D) No error.

Answer is (D). There is no error.

1. (A) Having received your letter/(B) this morning, we are writing/ (C) to thank you for the same/ (D) No error.

Answer is (D)

2. (A)You will get/ (B) all the information/ (C) if you read this booklet carefully/ (D) No error.

Answer is (A)

3. (A) An animal/ (B) can be just as unhappy in a vast area/ (C) or in a small one/ (D) No error.

Answer is (C)

4. (A) Shanghai is/ (B) bigger than any city/ (C) of the world/ (D) No error.

Answer is (B)

5. (A) He was sure/ (B) that he should/ (C) win the Prize/ (D) No error.
