IBPS PO Eligibility Criteria 2026 – Age, Qualification & Details

The eligibility criteria specified in the notification represent the basic minimum criteria for applying to the post of Probationary Officer/Management Trainee. However, candidates must note an important clarification from IBPS: merely applying for, qualifying in the CRP, and getting provisionally allotted to a bank does not automatically guarantee employment. The ultimate authority for recruitment rests with the Participating Bank, which may, at its sole discretion, reject the candidature of anyone provisionally allotted to it.

There are four broad pillars of eligibility that every aspirant must satisfy:

1. Nationality/Citizenship
2. Age Limit (with relaxation for reserved categories)
3. Educational Qualification
4. Category-specific eligibility (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD/Ex-Servicemen)

Let’s look at each in detail.

1. Nationality/Citizenship Requirements

A candidate applying for IBPS PO 2026 must be one of the following:

(i) A Citizen of India, or
(ii) A subject of Nepal, or
(iii) A subject of Bhutan, or
(iv) A Tibetan Refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
(v) A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam, with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Important: Candidates falling under categories (ii), (iii), (iv), and (v) above must possess a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India to be considered eligible.

2. Age Limit (As on 01.07.2026)

The age eligibility for IBPS PO 2026 is calculated as on 01.07.2026.

• Minimum Age: 20 years
• Maximum Age: 30 years

This means a candidate must have been born not earlier than 02.07.1996 and not later than 01.07.2006 (both dates inclusive) to be eligible under the General category.

Age Relaxation for Reserved Categories

IBPS provides upper age relaxation for candidates belonging to specific categories, as detailed below:

Important Notes on Age Relaxation

• The relaxation in upper age limit for SC/ST/OBC (NCL) candidates is allowed on a cumulative basis with only one of the remaining categories (PwBD or Ex-Servicemen) — you cannot stack relaxations from three or more categories simultaneously.
• The maximum age limit (30 years) applies as-is to General category and EWS category candidates — EWS does not get separate age relaxation.
• Candidates seeking age relaxation must submit the necessary original certificates, along with photocopies, at the time of Interview and at any subsequent stage of the recruitment process.
• A Caste/Category Certificate issued by a competent authority in the prescribed Government of India format is mandatory for SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/PwBD candidates claiming relaxation.

OBC Certificate Specific Requirement

For candidates applying under the OBC category:

• The certificate must specifically contain the “Non-Creamy Layer” clause.
• Candidates who fall under the OBC creamy layer are not entitled to OBC reservation and must indicate their category as General in the online application.
• The OBC (NCL) certificate must be issued on or after 01.04.2026, and remain valid up to the date of interview.

EWS Certificate Validity

For Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category candidates, the certificate must be valid for the year 2026-2027, pertaining to financial year 2025-26.

Ex-Servicemen Provision

If an ex-serviceman applies for various vacancies before joining civil employment, they can avail the benefit of reservation for any subsequent employment application — but only if they submit a self-declaration/undertaking about all applications made before joining. This benefit applies only to vacancies filled through direct recruitment where reservation is applicable. Notably, there is no reservation for Ex-Servicemen in the Officers’ Cadre — the 5-year age relaxation is the primary benefit available to them in this recruitment.

3. Educational Qualification (As on 21.07.2026)

The educational eligibility requirement is straightforward but has specific compliance conditions:

A Degree (Graduation) in any discipline from a University recognized by the Government of India, or any equivalent qualification recognized as such by the Central Government.

Key Conditions:

• The candidate must possess a valid Mark-sheet/Degree Certificate proving graduate status on the day of registration and must indicate the percentage of marks obtained in Graduation while registering online.
• The final result must have been declared on or before 21.07.2026.
• Proper documentary proof from the Board/University confirming the result declaration date must be submitted at the time of interview. If the result was published on the university’s website with a web-based certificate, the original document/certificate signed by the appropriate authority indicating the correct date of passing will be considered valid for verification.

Calculation of Percentage

This is an area many candidates get confused about, so here’s the exact formula as prescribed by IBPS:

Percentage = (Total marks obtained in all subjects across all semesters/years ÷ Aggregate maximum marks in all subjects) × 100

This applies irrespective of honours/optional/additional optional subjects, and even to universities where Class/Grade is decided purely on Honours marks.

Important rounding rule: The fraction of the percentage arrived at is ignored, not rounded up. For example:

• 59.99% will be treated as less than 60%
• 54.99% will be treated as less than 55%

CGPA/OGPA Conversion

If your university follows a Grade Point system (CGPA/OGPA) instead of percentage:

• You must convert your CGPA/OGPA into a percentage as per the criteria adopted by your University/Institute.
• Candidates must produce documentary proof of the conversion criteria used by their university at the time of Interview/Document Verification.
• If called for interview, a certificate from the appropriate university authority stating the conversion norms and the resultant percentage must be produced.

4. Economically Weaker Section (EWS) Eligibility

For candidates applying under the EWS category, specific income and asset criteria apply:

• Persons not covered under the existing SC/ST/OBC reservation scheme, whose family has a gross annual income below ₹8.00 lakh (Rupees Eight Lakh only), are identified as EWS.
• Income includes all sources: salary, agriculture, business, profession, etc., and pertains to the financial year prior to the year of application.

Asset Exclusions (Even if Income is Below ₹8 Lakh)

A family will be excluded from EWS status, irrespective of income, if it owns or possesses any of the following:

Property held by a “Family” across different locations or cities is clubbed together while applying this land/property holding test.

Definition of “Family” for EWS Purposes

The term “Family” includes:

• The person seeking the benefit of reservation
• Their parents
• Siblings below the age of 18 years
• Spouse
• Children below the age of 18 years

5. Reservation for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)

Under Section 34 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, the post is identified as suitable for candidates with benchmark disabilities under four broad categories:

A. Visual Impairment (VI)

Includes Blindness (total absence of sight, or visual acuity less than 3/60, or field of vision less than 10 degrees) and Low Vision (visual acuity between 6/18 and 3/60, or field of vision between 40 and 10 degrees).

B. Hearing Impaired (HI)

• Deaf: 70 DB hearing loss in speech frequencies in both ears
• Hard of Hearing: 60-70 DB hearing loss in speech frequencies in both ears

C. Orthopedically Challenged/Locomotor Disability (OC/LD)

Covers Cerebral Palsy, Leprosy Cured, Dwarfism, Muscular Dystrophy, Acid Attack Victims, Spinal Deformity, and Spinal Injury.

D. Intellectual Disability (ID)

Covers Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Specific Learning Disability (SLD — including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia), and Mental Illness (MI).

E. Multiple Disabilities

A combination of any of the above four categories.

Benchmark Disability Definition

Only candidates with not less than 40% of a specified disability qualify as having a “benchmark disability” and are eligible for reservation. A disability certificate issued by a Competent Authority (District Medical Board, consisting of Chief Medical Officer, Sub-Divisional Medical Officer, and an Orthopaedic/Ophthalmic/ENT Surgeon) as per Government of India guidelines is mandatory.

Important Update on Temporary Disabilities

As per Office Memorandum No. 18-25/2024-Policy dated 17.12.2025, issued by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities:

• PwBD candidates with a disability certificate marked “likely to improve” under the temporary disability category are NOT eligible for reservation.
• Only candidates with disability conditions marked as “Progressive,” “Non-progressive,” or “Not likely to improve” are eligible for reservation benefits.
