TET vs CTET 2026: If you want to become a teacher in India, two exam names appear everywhere: TET and CTET. Many aspirants confuse them, and some prepare for the wrong one. The choice affects which schools you can apply to, which exam you prepare for and even which city you live in.

What is CTET?

The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is a national-level exam conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Qualifying makes you eligible to apply for teaching posts in central government schools such as Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVS) and the Central Tibetan Schools Administration. It is also accepted by many CBSE-affiliated private schools.

CTET has two papers:

• Paper 1: Classes 1 to 5 (Primary)
• Paper 2: Classes 6 to 8 (Elementary)

What is TET (State TET)?

TET stands for Teacher Eligibility Test. Each state or union territory conducts its own version through its education department or board. Examples include KTET (Kerala), TNTET (Tamil Nadu), UPTET (Uttar Pradesh), REET (Rajasthan), HTET (Haryana), MAHA TET (Maharashtra) and APTET/TG TET (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana).

A state TET is meant for recruitment in that state’s government and aided schools, and it is usually valid only in the state that conducted it.

• CTET: CBSE, on behalf of the Central Government.
• State TET: The state’s own authority. In Kerala, for example, KTET is conducted by the state examination authority (Pareeksha Bhavan).

The base qualifications are laid down by NCTE and are broadly similar:

• Primary level (Classes 1–5): Senior Secondary with the minimum marks prescribed plus a D.El.Ed or equivalent teacher training course.
• Upper primary (Classes 6–8): Graduation with the prescribed marks plus a B.Ed, or the other recognised routes.

Differences to note:

• States may add their own conditions, such as residency, specific subject combinations, additional categories (for example Kerala’s separate categories for high school and language teachers) or relaxations.
• CTET has no state residency requirement.
• Always read the notification of the exam you are applying for.

CTET is accepted for:

• Government schools in that state
• Aided and local body schools in that state
• Private schools within the state

Most states require candidates to qualify their own state TET for state recruitment, though some states may accept CTET for certain recruitments depending on their rules.

Validity of CTET & TET Certificate

The CTET certificate is now valid for life, and this applies with effect from 2011. Earlier the validity was 7 years. State TET validity varies by state, and many states have also moved to lifetime validity, so check your state’s rules.

Exam Pattern and Syllabus for CTET & TET 2026

CTET pattern (both papers):

• 150 multiple-choice questions, 150 marks, 150 minutes
• No negative marking
• Sections: Child Development and Pedagogy, Language I, Language II, Mathematics, and Environmental Studies (Paper 1) or Science / Social Studies (Paper 2)
• Offline (OMR) exam

State TET pattern:

• Usually close to the CTET pattern (Child Development and Pedagogy, languages, subject sections), but the distribution, categories and languages depend on the state
• The state’s own syllabus is followed, with local language sections and sometimes state-specific topics

CTET is mainly concept-based with a national syllabus, while state TETs can be more localised.

Difficulty Level of TET and CTET Exam 2026

Opinions differ, and difficulty changes from year to year. A rough guide:

• CTET: Wider competition (candidates from all over India) and questions that test concepts, application and pedagogy.
• State TET: Competition is limited to your state, and the pass rate depends on the state and year.

• CTET: Held by CBSE, usually once or twice a year. The 22nd edition is scheduled for 12 and 13 December 2026, as per the revised notice. Confirm on ctet.nic.in.

Because state TETs can be infrequent, keep an eye on the state notification so you do not miss the window.

Job Opportunities and Salary for TET and CTET

After CTET:

• Apply for KVS, NVS and other central school teacher vacancies (as PRT/TGT, subject to each recruitment’s own exam and criteria)
• Apply to many CBSE-affiliated private schools
• Use the certificate across states wherever it is accepted

After State TET:

• Apply for state government and aided school recruitment
• Attend state PSC or teacher recruitment exams that require a TET
• Work in your home state

Both are eligibility tests. They do not give a job by themselves. Selection depends on the recruitment exam, interview or merit list for each vacancy.

Salary: Central school pay is generally set by central pay rules, while state pay follows the state’s scales. Check the latest recruitment notice for exact figures.

Can CTET Replace TET?

Not automatically. In most cases CTET cannot replace the state TET, although some states may allow CTET for certain recruitments. Read the state recruitment advertisement, because the rule is stated there.

Choose CTET if:

• You want to work in KVS, NVS or other central schools
• You want to be free to move between states
• You aim for CBSE-affiliated private schools nationwide

Choose State TET if:

• You want a government teaching job in your home state
• Your state’s recruitment demands its own TET
• You prefer state language sections and local syllabus

For most aspirants, yes.

• Wider opportunity: CTET for central schools and other states, TET for your home state.
• Overlap: The core subjects, especially Child Development and Pedagogy and the language sections, overlap, so your preparation carries over.
• Insurance: Missing the cut in one exam does not close the door.
• Lifetime validity: Once you pass and the certificate is valid for life, you do not have to reappear.
